The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.
We present a test for long-term couples who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This 2025 indie hit just made its streaming debut via Hulu. Outwardly, it might appear like conventional biological terror, but within Together resides a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.
An Introductory Film Delving into Relationship Dynamics
Together is the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot starts when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the rural area for her career. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a deep dive into the psyche of the pair’s relationship as it is a body horror flick.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.
The whole movie is a slow burn fright fest, weaving in moments of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together seamlessly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.
Complex Characterizations
A large part of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they masterfully render manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a emotional and physical gap. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career inexorably rises.
In contrast, Tim's character experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his network of friends. He dreads the notion of completely losing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is amplified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for transportation.
Shanks’ smartest move is that he refrains from painting Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Both characters face the type of challenges that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the paranormal elements in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for remaining unattached. Meanwhile, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.
Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply turn to your other half and say, “I’d do that for you”?
No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu at present.
