The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — A New Category May Address This Issue

Whenever a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

My colleague made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; it remains highly personal, and inevitably generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
  • Another creative title received no nominations that year
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
